Shree Ganesh Wall Mask — Hand-Painted Papier-Mâché, Raghurajpur

Before Ganesh is worshipped, he's built — shaped first in clay in a Raghurajpur courtyard, then built up in layer after layer of paper until the mould inside can be worked free, leaving a hollow, feather-light mask. Ganesh sits at doorways for a reason: the first face you see, the last obstacle you carry in. This one keeps the traditional Pattachitra palette — bold red and mustard, black outlining, the trunk curved toward abundance — hand-painted by Kesab Maharana, a young Raghurajpur artisan known locally for his precision with detail.

The craft

Called Mukha Chitra ("face painting") in Odisha, this technique pairs clay-mould sculpting with layered paper and the same natural pigments used in Pattachitra painting. It comes from Raghurajpur and neighbouring Danda Sahi — villages just outside Puri where this craft was never revived for tourism; it simply never stopped.

The artisan

Kesab Maharana works the traditional way, start to finish — modelling, layering, and painting himself. In a village where nearly every home has a craftsperson in it, his focus on getting the fine detail right is its own quiet reputation.
