SUSTAINABLY MADE:
Choosing a Handicraft is always sustainable; almost all the raw materials come from nature. Palm leaves, or Tala Patra (in Odia), are cut into rectangular pieces and semi-dried. They bury it in swamps and dry it in shade. The pieces are stitched together as required, on which they etch the desired paintings/texts. Artists use a sharp iron tool, known as “Lekhani” (in Odia) for etching. To highlight the figures, they rub black colour extracted from traditional lamps. Unlike mass-produced goods, the roots of Handicrafts have always been sustainable.
