Shree Ganesh Wall Mask — Hand-Painted Papier-Mâché, Raghurajpur

Before Ganesh is worshipped, he's built — shaped first in clay in a Raghurajpur courtyard, then built up in layer after layer of paper until the mould inside can be worked free, leaving a hollow, feather-light mask. Ganesh sits at doorways for a reason: the first face you see, the last obstacle you carry in. This one keeps the traditional Pattachitra palette — bold red and mustard, black outlining, the trunk curved toward abundance — hand-painted by Kesab Maharana, a young Raghurajpur artisan known locally for his precision with detail.

At a glance

  • Hand-sculpted and hand-painted by artisan Kesab Maharana, Raghurajpur
  • Traditional Mukha Chitra technique — clay mould, paper layers, natural pigments
  • Size(cm): 18 x 15.5 x 5.5 inches, lightweight, ready to wall-mount
  • Every piece is slightly one-of-a-kind — handmade, not mass-cast

The craft

Called Mukha Chitra ("face painting") in Odisha, this technique pairs clay-mould sculpting with layered paper and the same natural pigments used in Pattachitra painting. It comes from Raghurajpur and neighbouring Danda Sahi — villages just outside Puri where this craft was never revived for tourism; it simply never stopped.

The artisan

Kesab Maharana works the traditional way, start to finish — modelling, layering, and painting himself. In a village where nearly every home has a craftsperson in it, his focus on getting the fine detail right is its own quiet reputation.

Specs: Papier-mâché over hand-sculpted clay mould, chalk-primed, hand-painted · Size(cm): 18 x 15.5 x 5.5 · Origin: Raghurajpur, Odisha · Ready to wall-hang. Minor variation piece to piece is normal — it's the hand, not a flaw.

Care: Keep dry, away from humidity and direct sun for long hours. Dust with a soft, dry cloth only.

Every artisan we work with is named, not anonymous — this mask ships with that story attached.
