Not every mask needs a prayer attached — this one just needs a wall bold enough to hold it. Sculpted in clay and built up in paper the same way Odisha's ritual masks always have been, this tiger face trades devotion for drama: wide eyes, bared teeth, and the same fearless Pattachitra colour work usually saved for gods. Tigers show up often in Odisha's folk dance-drama as a symbol of raw strength — which is why this one works just as well on a study wall as it would on a temple stage.

At a glance

  • Hand-sculpted and hand-painted — no two masks are identical
  • Traditional Mukha Chitra technique, Raghurajpur
  • Approx. 6 inches, lightweight, ready to wall-mount
  • No religious symbolism — an easy gift for eclectic tastes

The craft

Locally called Mukha Chitra, this technique layers hand-pasted paper over a clay mould, finished in the same natural pigments as Pattachitra painting. It's rooted in Raghurajpur and neighbouring Danda Sahi, villages just outside Puri where mask-making has never stopped.

The artisan

Kesab Maharana, Raghurajpur — works the traditional way, clay to colour, no shortcuts. Add a line on what they're known for, the way the Ganesh listing does for Kesab Maharana.

Specs: Papier-mâché over hand-sculpted clay mould, chalk-primed, hand-painted · Approx. 3" · Origin: Raghurajpur Odisha · Ready to wall-hang. Minor variation piece to piece is normal — it's the hand, not a flaw.

Care: Keep dry, away from humidity and direct sun for long hours. Dust with a soft, dry cloth only.

Every artisan we work with is named, not anonymous.
